Electric sedan becomes second model from Volkswagen Anhui partnership targeting Chinese flagship segment.
Volkswagen unveiled the ID.UNYX 09 electric sedan ahead of the 2026 Beijing Auto Show. The model took just two years to develop with Xpeng assistance. It measures 197 inches long.
The sedan represents Volkswagen's second collaboration with Xpeng through the Volkswagen Anhui joint venture, where VW holds a 75-percent stake. At five meters in length, it exceeds the European ID.7 dimensions and targets the flagship sedan segment in China, according to Volkswagen's Beijing Auto Show presentation materials, published April 2026.

Partnership Delivers Second Joint Model
The ID.UNYX 09 follows the ID.UNYX 08 electric SUV revealed in late 2025. Both vehicles emerge from the Volkswagen Anhui joint venture established in 2017 with JAC Motors. Industry restructuring efforts across China have accelerated such partnerships as Western automakers seek local expertise. The sedan adopts split headlight design with LED daytime running lights flanking an illuminated VW logo. Black trim extends from the front bumper through the fenders into the doors. The A-pillars, roof, and door mirrors carry matching black finishes. Unlike the bulbous ID.7 sold in Europe, the Chinese sedan features sharper styling cues developed with Xpeng input.
Scale Targets Market Recovery
Volkswagen plans to launch more than 20 electrified models in China during 2026 alone. The company schedules another 30 new vehicles by 2029. Simple arithmetic shows this equals 50 total launches over four years, or 12.5 models annually on average. The ID.UNYX 09 joins five existing sedans in VW's Chinese lineup: Lavida Pro, Sagitar, Lamando L, Magotan, and Passat Pro. The 197-inch length exceeds the ID.7 by approximately 3 inches. The sedan rides on 21-inch wheels with Pirelli P Zero tires. Brembo brakes handle stopping duties. Chinese automakers have rejected shared production models that compete directly with joint ventures like Volkswagen Anhui.

Skoda Exit Creates Brand Hierarchy Gap
Skoda's planned withdrawal from China later in 2026 removes one tier from Volkswagen Group's local brand structure. The Jetta sub-brand will expand to fill this positioning gap, while the China-only AUDI marque covers premium territory above Volkswagen. The ID.UNYX 09 becomes VW's largest sedan offering in the market, potentially claiming flagship status. However, the model will not reach markets outside China, avoiding overlap with the European ID.7. This geographic restriction limits the sedan's global impact despite its development speed. The Volkswagen Anhui partnership gives VW access to Xpeng's software capabilities and local supply chains. Chinese brands have demonstrated growing export success while Western manufacturers focus on domestic Chinese operations.
Design Departs From Global Strategy
The ID.UNYX 09 styling contrasts sharply with Volkswagen's conservative global sedan approach. While the European ID.7 maintains rounded proportions typical of the ID family, the Chinese model adopts aggressive lines and split lighting signatures. The sedan retains a conventional trunk rather than the Arteon-style liftback configuration used elsewhere. This design divergence reflects differing regional preferences between Chinese and European buyers. Volkswagen discontinued both the Passat and Arteon in key markets, yet develops new sedan variants specifically for China. The company invests in China-exclusive models while reducing sedan options in other regions. This strategy acknowledges China's continued sedan demand versus global SUV preference shifts.
The Volkswagen Anhui joint venture was established nine years ago in 2017 but only began producing vehicles in late 2025. JAC Motors retains its 25-percent minority stake despite VW's controlling position.
