Everything you need to know about using Global Auto Index

Browsing the catalog

The Global Auto Index catalog is organised in a hierarchy: Maker → Body Style → Model → Specifications. You can enter at any level using the navigation bar, the search box, or the alphabetical maker lists.

The quickest way to start is the Car Makers section, accessible from the top navigation. From there you can browse manufacturers alphabetically (A–Z) or filter by first letter using the letter navigation bar.

💡 Use the Makers dropdown in the breadcrumb to jump directly to any letter — hover over any "Makers X" link to see the full A–Z list.

Finding car makers

Each manufacturer page contains:

  • Fact File — corporate details: company name, address, telephone, website and parent corporation
  • Current Line-up — models currently in production with photos
  • Previous Models — discontinued models
  • News — press releases and announcements from this manufacturer
  • Variations — related brands, subsidiaries and rebadged versions
  • Assembly Plants — where vehicles are or were built, including contract assemblers

Many manufacturers have multiple entries — for example, a brand may have separate listings for different regional operations (e.g. Toyota Japan vs Toyota Europe). These are cross-referenced through the Variations section.

Models & specifications

Model pages are reached by clicking on a body style from the manufacturer page. Each model page shows:

  • Available Versions — engine and trim variants, each linking to a full specification sheet
  • Picture Gallery — official press photographs for that specific model
  • Production Years — when the model was in production

Specification sheets include engine displacement, power output, transmission type, body dimensions, weight and fuel consumption where available. Not all data is present for every model — some older or rarer vehicles have limited documentation.

💡 Click any photo in the gallery to view the full-size image.

Photos & gallery

Global Auto Index hosts over 100,000 vehicle photographs. All images are official press photographs supplied by manufacturers and are used for reference and identification purposes.

Photos are available at two sizes:

  • Thumbnail — shown in listings and maker pages
  • Full size — opens when you click a thumbnail in a model gallery

If a model shows a placeholder instead of a photo, the image has not yet been added to the database or was not available from the manufacturer.

News archive

The News section contains an archive of automotive press releases published on Global Auto Index since 2002. Articles are sorted by publication date and can be filtered and sorted on the News page.

Each article includes the original manufacturer press release text. The date shown at the top of each article is the date it was published on Global Auto Index, which may differ from the date the press release was issued by the manufacturer.

💡 Use the Sort by Title option on the News page to find articles about a specific model or brand alphabetically.
