The coupe-SUV body style disappears entirely from VW's electric range, with no direct replacement confirmed.
Volkswagen has axed the ID.5. No successor. No coupe-SUV replacement waiting in reserve. The model, launched in 2021 as VW's first electric SUV-coupe, ends production once the ID. Tiguan arrives in early 2027. One model now does what two could not.
The decision is the clearest sign yet that Wolfsburg's portfolio cull is reaching the EV range. VW Group has publicly targeted cuts of up to 50 percent across its total model lineup, according to statements attributed to group management and reported in trade filings reviewed through September 2025. Where the ID.4 outsold the ID.5 in every major European market tracked Automobile Manufacturers' Association quarterly registration data, published Q2 2025, the coupe variant never built a commercially distinct case for its own survival.

One Replacement, Two Casualties
Stefan Voswinkel, a Volkswagen spokesperson, told Motor1 in late September 2025 that no direct replacement for the ID.5 is planned. The ID. Tiguan takes over from both electric SUVs simultaneously. It debuts at a world premiere scheduled for early October 2025 and goes on sale in European markets at the start of 2027. VW chose to build the ID. Tiguan on the ID.4's conventional, upright platform rather than carrying forward the coupe roofline. Wolfsburg's stated rationale is interior space and a clearer visual connection to the combustion-engined Tiguan, which remains among Europe's top-five selling passenger vehicles. The consolidation fits a broader industry restructuring trend across major OEMs in 2026, in which multi-model EV platforms are being collapsed into single, higher-volume nameplates to reduce per-unit cost drag.
The Arithmetic of Consolidation
The ID.5 launched in 2021. It ran for approximately four model years before confirmation of discontinuation in late 2025 — a product cycle roughly half the length of the ID.4's planned lifespan. VW Group's stated target of cutting up to 50 percent of its total lineup implies, across a portfolio of roughly 40 distinct bodystyles group-wide, the elimination of approximately 20 variants. The ID.5 accounts for one. At list pricing between €48,000 and €61,000 in Germany at time of writing, and with GTX dual-motor variants adding a further €6,000 to €8,000 premium, the ID.5 occupied a price band where Chinese competitors — including models from manufacturers now entering European registration data — have begun undercutting VW by €10,000 or more at comparable range figures. Maintaining two electric SUVs in adjacent segments, at overlapping price points, produced a combined European market share that remained below 2 percent of the battery-electric segment in 2024, per ACEA registration data, full year 2024.

Wolfsburg's Own Words Close the Door
Voswinkel's statement to Motor1 — that "there won't be a direct replacement for the ID.5" — is the first unambiguous public confirmation from a named VW official that the coupe-SUV format is being abandoned rather than deferred. Earlier in 2024, speculation about the ID.5's future circulated in German automotive trade press, but VW had not formally addressed the question on record. The confirmation arrives alongside the ID. Tiguan tease, which VW released on the same day as the spokesperson comment, a sequencing that left no interpretive room. VW's broader naming shift — from numerical ID. designations toward inherited combustion nameplates such as Tiguan, Polo, and Cross — had been flagged in internal communications referenced by Automobilwoche as early as Q4 2023, though the full scope of which numerical models would survive was not specified in that reporting.
Where the ID.5 Went Wrong Versus the Capri
Ford's Capri, which shares the Volkswagen Group's MEB platform via the Amulet platform relationship with Volkswagen's former affiliate Rivian tie-up discussions — and more directly via Ford's own MEB licensing agreement — launched in 2024 as a coupe-SUV directly comparable to the ID.5 in concept. Ford chose to lean into the Capri nameplate's heritage. VW chose a number. That distinction matters commercially: the Capri entered European order books with a waiting list in several markets, while the ID.5 was offered with discounts of up to €12,500 off list in certain European markets by mid-2025, a figure comparable to the discount VW applied to ID.4 stock clearance in the United States. Kia's own EV sales data in the UK shows that heritage-branded or model-continuous EVs retained stronger residual values than numerical newcomers across the same period, a structural disadvantage the ID.5 never overcame.
The Gap No Successor Fills
One number VW has not published: the ID.5's total global sales figure, broken down separately from the ID.4. ACEA and national registration bodies log the two models under distinct type-approval codes in Europe, but VW's own quarterly sales releases grouped electric SUV volumes without separating them by roofline variant through most of 2024. That absence matters. If the ID.5 had been a commercial success, the split would have been in every press release. It was not. What is also unconfirmed: whether any GTX performance variant of the ID. Tiguan is planned at launch. The ID.5 GTX, with its dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, was the variant most clearly differentiated from the ID.4 range. BMW's confirmed four-motor M3 launch in 2027 illustrates that performance EV sub-variants remain commercially attractive — making VW's silence on a GTX-spec ID. Tiguan a gap worth watching. No date for a GTX announcement has been given.
The ID.5 was never homologated for sale in the United States, limiting its addressable market to Europe and select right-hand-drive territories from the outset. That geographical restriction, combined with a cargo volume penalty of approximately 65 litres compared with the ID.4 at equivalent trim, narrowed the buyer case to aesthetics alone — an argument that proved insufficient. VW Group's next confirmed all-electric reveal beyond the ID. Tiguan is the electric Polo, targeted at the A-segment for 2026 entry.
