How a Former Racing Driver Built Monaco's Only Supercar
Fulvio-Maria Ballabio, founder of Monte Carlo Automotive and a former Formula 2 and CART competitor, assembled an unlikely team for the project. Five Cars, Two Le Mans Runs, One Surviving Estimate
Monte Carlo Automotive built exactly five Centenaires. Two of those were subsequently modified for Le Mans trials, where they reportedly recorded 220 mph on the Mulsanne Straight before chicanes were introduced in 1990 to cap straight-line speeds. The auction estimate of €900,000 to €1,200,000 converts at current exchange rates to approximately $967,000 to $1,290,000 — a spread of $323,000 between floor and ceiling, meaning the top estimate is 33.4% above the bottom (calculation: $1,290,000 ÷ $967,000 = 1.334). If the car clears the upper estimate with a standard 12% buyer's premium applied, the all-in cost reaches roughly $1,444,800. What the History File Actually Contains

That file includes the original supply contract between Lamborghini and Fulvio-Maria Ballabio covering the V12 engines — a document that establishes the commercial relationship between Sant'Agata Bolognese and Monte Carlo Automotive at the outset of the project. Period photographs from the Lamborghini factory and from Rétromobile 2007 are also included. The red leather interior is documented as untouched through the bodywork restoration carried out around 2016. That restoration returned the car's exterior to Ivory White, the original specification. According to the Broad Arrow consignment documentation, the colour combination was chosen deliberately to echo Monaco's red-and-white flag. No factory build sheet or homologation paperwork is listed among the included items in the published lot description, and Broad Arrow has not confirmed whether either document exists.
The Consignment Case, in the Auctioneer's Own Words
Gregory Tuytens, Head of Consignments for Belgium and the Netherlands at Broad Arrow Auctions, issued a statement alongside the September 2026 lot announcement. "Today's collector demands exclusivity and this car is unrivaled in that regard," Tuytens said. The claim is defensible on raw numbers: five units built, one previously held at the Lamborghini factory for roughly a decade before being gifted back to Ballabio in the early 2000s. Tuytens did not specify a reserve figure in the public statement, and Broad Arrow has not responded to questions about whether the car carries one. The sale takes place at Approach Golf in Knokke-Heist, Belgium, timed to the Zoute Grand Prix Car Week on 9 October 2026. Knokke-Heist hosted Broad Arrow's first Zoute event in 2025, where the Pregunta concept from the same provenance chain appeared. That venue pairing is deliberate; the Centenaire was shown at Rétromobile 2007 parked beside the Pregunta, making the connection between the two lots explicit in collector memory.
The Carbon Monocoque Claim That Nobody Has Formally Verified
Monte Carlo Automotive and subsequent coverage have described the Centenaire's carbon-fibre monocoque as a first for a production road car. The claim has circulated for three decades without a formal independent assessment. McLaren's F1 — often cited as the reference point for carbon monocoque road cars — reached production in 1992, two years after the Centenaire's debut. The Lotus Esprit used a steel backbone chassis through the same period. No published technical audit from the FIA, an independent engineering body, or an academic institution has confirmed or challenged the Monte Carlo Automotive claim in the sources reviewed for this article. Broad Arrow's consignment material repeats the assertion without qualification or citation. Whether that claim affects collector appetite is a different question — the McLaren lineage carries its own documented monocoque history — but the absence of third-party verification is a gap buyers at this price level may want addressed before the hammer falls.
