Chery-JLR Freelander 8 measures 5.1m at Beijing Auto Show

Range-extending electric drivetrain joins PHEV and pure EV options on shared platform architecture.

Chery and Jaguar Land Rover unveiled the production Freelander 8 at Beijing Auto Show. The 5.1-metre SUV revives the nameplate as a standalone electrified brand. Six models will follow over five years.

The Freelander 8 marks the first product from a 50:50 joint venture between the Chinese manufacturer and British luxury group. Unlike the original Land Rover Freelander sold from 1997-2006, this iteration targets New Energy Vehicle regulations across multiple markets including right-hand drive territories, according to Motor1's Beijing Auto Show coverage, published April 2026.

Platform supports three electrified drivetrains

The Freelander 8 sits on architecture accommodating battery-electric, plug-in hybrid and range-extending electric powertrains. CATL supplies batteries with 350-kW charging capability, while air suspension and electronic limited-slip differential feature as standard equipment. Three-row seating configuration targets families in China's crowded SUV market. The platform flexibility allows automotive partnerships to spread development costs across multiple drivetrain types. Roof-mounted LiDAR units support advanced driver assistance systems common in Chinese market vehicles. Production occurs at Changshu factory through distinct retailer network separate from existing JLR dealers.

Design references original but adds EV cues

The Freelander 8's triangular rear quarter glass echoes the 1997-2006 first-generation three-door model. Square headlights provide another visual link to the original L134 series. However, the closed-off front grille signals electric drivetrain capability, while debossed Freelander script replaces traditional chrome badging. The production version measures between Defender 110 and Defender 130 dimensions but lacks the rear spare wheel that defined the original's off-road character. Semi-enclosed door handles replace the concept's flush units after China banned completely flush handles for safety reasons. BMW's long-wheelbase iX3 required similar door handle modifications for Beijing Auto Show compliance.

Joint venture targets crowded Chinese market

The Freelander brand operates as a distinct marque focused on New Energy Vehicles rather than traditional Land Rover products. Motor1 noted the joint venture "will seek to find its place in China's incredibly crowded market, where a new brand seems to appear every other week." The 50:50 partnership structure gives both Chery and JLR equal control over product development and market strategy. Six SUV models will launch over the next five years, with the Freelander 8 establishing the brand's positioning against established Chinese EV manufacturers. Chinese brands have gained traction in overseas markets, potentially giving Freelander access to established distribution networks.

Nameplate revival raises reliability concerns

The Freelander name carries historical baggage from its original incarnation's reliability issues, particularly first-generation models sold through 2006. Motor1 questioned why JLR and Chery chose to revive the nameplate rather than create a completely new brand identity. The original Freelander's mixed reputation in key markets could complicate customer acceptance of the electrified successor. Range-extending electric drivetrain technology may differentiate the Freelander 8 temporarily, but other manufacturers are investing in similar REEV systems. The decision to resurrect a discontinued nameplate contrasts with Chinese manufacturers typically launching with fresh brand identities in overseas markets.

The Freelander 8 transitions from concept to production in under six weeks, with interior details including pillar-to-pillar screens yet to be confirmed. Conventional B-pillar doors replace the concept's rear-hinged configuration for production feasibility. The complete Freelander model history and specifications are catalogued in the Global Auto Index manufacturer database.
