Base model includes passenger display as digital photo frame, not touchscreen like optional Superscreen.
Mercedes forces all 2027 C-Class EV buyers to accept three dashboard screens. Base models get a passenger display. But it won't respond to touch. The electric variant abandons the screen-free option available on combustion models.
The move contrasts with Mercedes' CLA launch strategy, where entry-level versions replaced passenger screens with piano-black plastic panels. German luxury brands now compete on screen real estate, with BMW's upcoming M3 also emphasising digital interfaces according to Mercedes' MBUX technical documentation, published April 2024.

Standard MBUX bundles three displays under single glass
Mercedes' base MBUX configuration combines a 10.3-inch instrument cluster, 14-inch central screen, and digitally animated trim panel beneath unified glass. The passenger-side element functions as a digital photo frame, displaying user-selected images from the infotainment system without touch capability. Customers wanting interactive passenger controls must upgrade to the optional Superscreen package. The premium Hyperscreen option delivers a continuous 39.1-inch display, eliminating bezels entirely. This mirrors the electric GLC's cabin architecture, extending the same visual approach across Mercedes' EV lineup. The W520 platform underpinning the electric C-Class shares no components with the W206 combustion model launched in 2021.
CLA offers screen-free alternative, C-Class EV does not
The CLA's base specification allows customers to delete the passenger display entirely, substituting piano-black plastic decorated with three-pointed stars. This choice divides buyers between those accepting screen proliferation and others preferring minimalist cabins. The C-Class EV eliminates this option completely. European production constraints may influence Mercedes' decision to standardise components across trim levels. The combustion C-Class receives its mid-cycle facelift later in 2024, but Mercedes hasn't confirmed whether screen configurations will align between powertrains. Manufacturing efficiency drives automakers toward fewer interior variants, reducing assembly complexity at Stuttgart facilities.
Former design chief calls large displays essential despite luxury concerns
Gorden Wagener, Mercedes' former design chief, defended supersized displays in interviews with automotive media during 2023. "You want to have a visual reference on the screen, or you might want to watch a movie and stuff like that. So yeah, you need big screens," Wagener told Top Gear. However, the same executive admitted to ABC News that "screens are not luxury," acknowledging the tension between functionality and premium aesthetics. This contradiction highlights Mercedes' struggle to balance customer expectations with interior design principles. High-end models including the 2027 S-Class and upcoming electric AMG GT Four-Door Coupe continue featuring triple-screen layouts despite these reservations.

Screen mandate contradicts Mercedes luxury positioning
Mercedes positions itself above mass-market brands through handcrafted interior elements and material quality. Yet the C-Class EV's mandatory screen configuration mirrors approaches from cost-conscious manufacturers standardising components across model ranges. Traditional luxury signifiers like mechanical switches and analog gauges disappear entirely from the electric variant. Mercedes hasn't explained why the C-Class EV cannot offer the CLA's screen-deletion option, particularly given customer preference data showing mixed reception to display-heavy cabins. The decision suggests platform limitations or supply chain constraints rather than customer demand. BMW and Audi face identical challenges integrating screens while maintaining luxury differentiation, but neither mandates passenger displays across all trim levels.
The electric C-Class enters production at Bremen in Q3 2026, with first deliveries scheduled for January 2027. Mercedes expects 85% of buyers to specify either Superscreen or Hyperscreen upgrades over the base configuration. Screen suppliers include Continental AG and LG Display.
