Intro: ZAZ, once the manufacturer of the NSU Prinz lookalike Zaporoshetz is now controlled by UkrAvto, the biggest automotive dealer group un Ukraine.
The company was once a partner of Daewo, and production of the Lanos is still going strong. By mid-2005 there were three different Lanos models offered: the Daewoo Lanos, SKD assembled from Polish-supplied kits, the Daewoo Sens with Ukrainian engine and the ZAZ Lanos, built from South Korean kits. ZAZ also bought a stake in the ailing FSO plant in Poland in the Spring of 2005, but further plans were not revealed.
Another portion of production is devoted to self-designed Tavria and Slavuta cars which are still market leaders in Ukraine.
ZAZ is also the sole producer of the Lada Samara I family. Also CKD assembly of the Opel Astra T300 commenced in February, 2004.
ZAZ has two production plants: one in Zaporozhye, the other in Illychevsk. The latter caters for SKD assembly of various models, from the likes of Opel, Chevrolet and DaimlerChrysler.
In November, 2004 CKD assembly of the Lanos (T150) commenced in Zaporozhye. Localisation of this model is under way. Export of a Chevrolet-badged version of this model was started in late 2005. |
