Lexus TZ debuts 2027 with 300-mile range and synthetic V10 sound

Toyota's luxury brand enters three-row electric SUV segment with dual-motor configuration and forged bamboo interior trim.

Lexus will launch the TZ electric SUV in late 2027, targeting 300 miles of range with dual-motor all-wheel drive. The six-seat model features synthetic V10 sound. It's the brand's first three-row electric vehicle.

The TZ enters a competitive luxury electric SUV market against the Volvo EX90, Mercedes EQS SUV, and Cadillac Vistiq. Toyota has faced criticism for slow EV deployment compared to European competitors, according to industry analysis from automotive consultancy Schmidt Automotive Research, published March 2024.

Platform Engineering Delivers Space Gains

TNGA platform modifications pushed the TZ wheelbase to 120.1 inches, gaining 7.9 inches over the gas-powered LX. At 200.8 inches long, it matches the LX but sits 0.2 inches lower at 67.1 inches tall. Two battery options deliver different capabilities: the 76.96kWh unit provides base range while the 95.82kWh version targets 300 miles. Calculating power density shows 4.2 kWh per estimated mile of range (95.82 ÷ 300 = 0.319 kWh/mile). Weight distribution across the 5,798-pound structure benefits from floor-mounted battery placement. The recent wave of OEM model launches shows similar platform strategies among luxury brands.

Power Output Exceeds Highlander Sibling

Global specifications list 402hp for the range-topping TZ, delivering 64hp more than the dual-motor Highlander. Acceleration reaches 62mph in 5.4 seconds despite the substantial curb weight. The TZ maintains standard all-wheel drive across all variants, unlike the front-drive Highlander base model planned for North America. Lexus achieves a 0.27 drag coefficient through flush door handles and aerodynamic mirror design, matching performance-focused competitors. BMW's upcoming four-motor M3 targets dramatically higher output at 1,300hp, showing the performance EV spectrum continues expanding. Underbody fins and low-rolling-resistance tires on 20 or 22-inch wheels optimize efficiency.

Synthetic Sound System Mimics LFA Engine

Toyota Chief Branding Officer Simon Humphries confirmed the TZ will offer LFA-inspired synthetic engine sound "available on demand" during the model's presentation. The audio system replicates the naturally aspirated V10 soundtrack from Lexus's discontinued supercar, addressing customer concerns about electric vehicle silence. Humphries positioned the feature as optional rather than standard, allowing drivers to choose their acoustic experience. The 21-speaker Mark Levinson audio system handles both synthetic engine notes and conventional entertainment functions. Recent developments in automotive audio technology show manufacturers increasingly focus on artificial sound generation for electric vehicles. Lexus claims the TZ achieves the quietest cabin in their SUV lineup without the synthetic audio active.

Market Entry Faces Established Competition

The TZ launch positions Lexus against entrenched competitors including Volvo's EX90, which already captures luxury three-row EV sales in North America. Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and Cadillac Vistiq hold market share that Lexus must contest through pricing and feature differentiation. Rivian R1S appeals to different customer segments but competes for the same household purchase decisions. Late 2027 availability means Toyota's luxury division enters after rivals establish dealer networks and customer relationships. NACS charging port compatibility provides access to Tesla's Supercharger network, potentially offsetting the delayed launch timing. Industry analysis suggests luxury EV buyers prioritize charging infrastructure over brand loyalty, benefiting later entrants with superior charging access.

The TZ features the longest sliding panoramic sunroof available globally and one-touch folding for second and third-row seats. Ventilated seats extend to both front rows. Production begins Q3 2027.
