Mercedes drops C-Class EV wagon as Europe wagon sales collapse

Head of Exterior Design Robert Lešnik confirms no electric estate version planned despite 30-year tradition.

Mercedes will not produce an electric C-Class wagon. Sales data shows collapsing demand across America, China and Europe. The decision breaks three decades of estate variants. Head of Exterior Design Robert Lešnik delivered the verdict.

The move represents the first time since the S202 generation debuted in 1996 that Mercedes has skipped a C-Class wagon variant, reflecting broader market shifts away from estate bodystyles toward SUVs. Lešnik's assessment highlights how automaker portfolio restructuring increasingly prioritises volume sellers over niche segments, according to his interview with Autocar, published April 2024.

Design chief declares wagon demand dead

Lešnik's diagnosis was blunt: "Nobody is buying them." Speaking to Autocar, he outlined the regional breakdown behind Mercedes' decision. "Nobody is buying them in America; we tried the shooting brake version of the CLS and nobody bought it. The Chinese don't understand them and don't buy them." That leaves Europe as the sole remaining market, where he questions affordability. "If you look at a Mercedes E-Class, it's pretty expensive – so who can actually buy a car like that in Europe?" The assessment reflects internal sales data that convinced Stuttgart to abandon the bodystyle for the electric C-Class generation, despite designer and journalist enthusiasm for wagons remaining strong.

BMW takes opposite approach with i3 Touring

BMW has moved in the opposite direction, recently teasing an i3 Touring that would directly compete with the cancelled Mercedes electric wagon. Munich lacks a rival for the CLA Shooting Brake, creating a gap below the 5 Series i5 Touring in their electric lineup. This strategic divergence highlights different interpretations of European wagon demand. While BMW continues expanding its electric performance portfolio, Mercedes appears more conservative about niche bodystyles. The German rivals' opposing strategies will test whether any viable market remains for electric estate cars under €60,000. BMW hasn't committed to future combustion 3 Series wagons either, suggesting uncertainty across the segment.

Six generations, one bodystyle gap

The electric C-Class represents the nameplate's sixth generation since the original W202 launched in 1993. Every generation from the S202 onwards offered an estate variant: S202 (1996-2001), S203 (2001-2007), S204 (2007-2014), S205 (2014-2021), and current S206 (2021-present). The break represents a 33% reduction in bodystyle options compared to previous generations. Mercedes currently offers wagons across multiple segments: C-Class Estate, E-Class Estate, CLA Shooting Brake, and the lifted C-Class All-Terrain. Production numbers remain undisclosed, but Lešnik's comments suggest sub-commercial volumes across all variants. The CLS Shooting Brake was discontinued after just two generations, lasting from 2012 to 2021.

GLC prioritised over electric estate practicality

Mercedes will channel resources toward the GLC SUV instead of developing an electric C-Class Estate. The decision aligns with broader industry production capacity constraints forcing manufacturers to prioritise higher-volume models. Engineering teams working on electric drivetrains will focus on SUV applications rather than adapting the new C-Class EV platform for estate use. The combustion S206 C-Class Estate continues with a planned mid-cycle facelift, extending its lifecycle several more years. Lešnik identified the current E-Class Estate as "almost perfect," but even larger wagons face uncertain futures beyond their current generations. Fleet buyers seeking electric estates must look elsewhere or switch to SUV alternatives.

The S206 C-Class Estate facelift will arrive in 2025, featuring updated LED lighting and interior technology. Lešnik, a Slovenian designer who joined Mercedes in 2018, previously worked on Renault and Citroën projects before moving to Stuttgart. His favourite personal car remains the E-Class Estate.
