Skoda Epiq targets €25k with 273-mile range in VW Group budget EV push

Front-wheel-drive crossover launches with MEB+ platform and three power outputs from 114hp to 208hp.

Skoda launched the Epiq crossover targeting budget EV buyers with 273-mile maximum range. The Czech brand's smallest electric vehicle starts from prices matching the combustion Kamiq. Three power outputs span 114hp to 208hp.

The Epiq strengthens Volkswagen Group's attack on Chinese budget EVs flooding European markets. Unlike premium siblings, this 4.17-metre crossover uses front-wheel-drive MEB+ architecture to cut costs below €30,000 in most European markets, according to Skoda's product specification documents published May 2024.

Compact Dimensions Hide Cargo Space Advantage

The Epiq measures 4,171mm long, 1,798mm wide and 1,581mm tall with a 2,601mm wheelbase. Boot capacity reaches 475 litres versus the petrol Kamiq's 400 litres — a 75-litre advantage. Rear seats fold to create 1,344 litres total volume. The calculation shows 18.8% more cargo space despite similar exterior footprint. Aerodynamics achieve 0.275 drag coefficient through active front shutters and 17-19 inch wheels optimised for airflow. Weight distribution places the single motor over the front axle with batteries mounted low in the floor structure for handling balance.

Battery Chemistry Split Divides Range Performance

Two battery technologies create distinct performance tiers. Base models use 37kWh lithium iron phosphate cells delivering 310km range and 90kW DC charging. The premium 51.7kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt unit extends range to 440km with 125kW charging capability. This mirrors strategies from Korean manufacturers splitting entry and premium EV ranges. Charging times span 24-28 minutes for 10-80% depending on battery choice. The LFP chemistry costs roughly €3,000 less but sacrifices 130km range compared to NMC alternatives across Volkswagen Group's platform standardisation efforts.

MEB+ Platform Debuts Front-Drive Focus

Skoda's technical specification sheet confirms the Epiq as the first production model using MEB+ architecture exclusively for front-wheel-drive layouts. The platform eliminates rear motor mounting points and reduces battery cooling complexity versus full MEB systems. Motor outputs of 114hp, 133hp and 208hp share identical 267Nm torque except the flagship's 290Nm rating. Top-spec models reach 100km/h in 7.1 seconds with 160km/h maximum speed. According to Volkswagen Group's platform documentation from April 2024, MEB+ reduces manufacturing costs by approximately 15% through simplified drivetrain integration and component sharing with the ID.Polo and Cupra Raval siblings.

Design Language Launches Modern Solid Approach

Skoda describes the Epiq's styling as "Modern Solid" featuring T-shaped lighting signatures front and rear. The design abandons traditional Skoda winged-arrow badges for lettering across rear pillars, following industry trends toward spelled-out brand names. Interior equipment includes a 5.3-inch digital cluster with 13-inch central touchscreen as standard. Higher trim levels add ambient lighting and soft fabric materials matching seat upholstery. Traditional door handles replace flush alternatives despite aerodynamic penalties, keeping manufacturing costs down. The company states this approach "maintains accessibility while achieving aerodynamic efficiency through other means" in product briefing documents.

Chinese EV Competition Forces Pricing Pressure

The Epiq's sub-€30,000 positioning directly responds to Chinese manufacturers flooding European markets with affordable electric crossovers. Recent Chinese success in UK sales charts has forced traditional manufacturers to abandon premium-only EV strategies. Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume confirmed during Q1 earnings calls that budget EVs now represent "existential necessity" rather than market opportunity. The Epiq joins sister models ID.Cross and Cupra Raval in targeting the 25,000-35,000 euro segment where Chinese brands like BYD and MG currently dominate. Production begins at Mladá Boleslav in early 2025 with annual capacity targeting 150,000 units across three shifts.

The Epiq launches alongside the larger Peaq three-row SUV debuting later in 2024, expanding Skoda's electric range to five models. Both vehicles will offer over-the-air updates and Vehicle-to-Grid functionality from launch. Production capacity at Mladá Boleslav increases to 400,000 annual units by 2026.
