Mercedes-AMG GT drops V8 for 1,153hp electric powertrain in 2027

Four-door performance flagship achieves 2.0-second acceleration with triple-motor all-wheel drive setup.

Mercedes-AMG confirmed the GT 4-Door will launch in 2027 with electric power only. The V8 is gone. Triple motors deliver 1,153 horsepower in GT63 specification, reaching 60 mph in 2.0 seconds.

The shift marks AMG's first fully electric GT model, contrasting sharply with BMW's four-motor M3 approach debuting the same year. Mercedes confirmed the specifications in technical documentation released May 2024, positioning the electric GT against Tesla's Model S Plaid and Porsche Taycan Turbo S.

Technical Blueprint Reveals Battery Architecture

Mercedes developed a 106.0-kilowatt-hour battery system with individual cell cooling for the GT 4-Door project. The technical specification sheet details three axial flux motors—two rear-mounted, one front—creating rear-biased all-wheel drive. Each battery cell measures smaller than previous Mercedes EV designs, enabling higher energy density. The 600-kilowatt charging capability adds 286 miles of range in 10 minutes, according to internal testing data. WLTP cycle testing recorded 435 miles maximum range. The same battery technology powered the AMG GT XX concept's 3,404-mile endurance record in 24 hours. OEM model launches in the 2000s era never approached these power density figures.

Power Figures Exceed Combustion Predecessors

The GT55 variant produces 805 horsepower and 1,328 pound-feet of torque, reaching 60 mph in 2.4 seconds. GT63 specification increases output to 1,153 horsepower and 1,475 pound-feet. The torque figure represents 2.5 times the output of the outgoing 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. Mercedes achieved a 0.22 drag coefficient through active aerodynamics. The rear spoiler deploys at speed while the diffuser extends 2.0 inches from the bumper. Frunk storage measures 2.1 cubic feet, compared to zero storage in the combustion model's engine bay. These numbers place the GT63 ahead of most current electric performance cars in raw acceleration metrics.

Design Language Breaks From Combustion Era

The production GT 4-Door borrows heavily from the AMG GT XX concept shown in 2022, particularly the sloping roofline and front grille treatment. Unlike the concept's rear lightbar, production models use a blacked-out taillight strip similar to other recent Mercedes designs. The Sky Control panoramic roof features embedded LEDs displaying the AMG logo—a first for Mercedes production cars. Interior architecture centers on an angled driver display with air vents positioned behind the screen. Physical controls are minimal except for drive mode dials on the center console. The traditional AMG engine plaque now sits inside the frunk, including a QR code linking to development team videos.

Rear Seating Layout Omits Expected Features

The GT 4-Door's rear passenger area lacks a fold-down center armrest with cupholders, standard equipment in this price segment. Dropping the middle section creates a pass-through to the trunk without additional storage compartments. Rear passengers receive USB-C ports and individual HVAC controls, but headroom remains limited compared to conventional sedans. The omission appears deliberate rather than cost-cutting, given the expensive Sky Control roof system and carbon fiber interior trim. Mercedes has not explained this design choice in official documentation. The plastic air vents, identical to S-Class units, contrast with the otherwise premium cabin materials including leather and metal accents.

Mercedes plans to phase out all combustion AMG models by 2030, according to internal roadmap documents. The GT 4-Door represents the first step in this transition, with C63 and E63 electric variants following by 2028. Production begins at the Sindelfingen plant in early 2027.
