Cadillac hits 100,000 EVs with 75% buyers switching from Tesla

Brand captures customers from Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus across five-model electric lineup since 2023.

Cadillac reached 100,000 electric vehicle sales in four years. Three-quarters were brand switchers. Tesla lost the most customers to GM's electric push.

The milestone reflects Cadillac's conquest strategy against established electric and luxury competitors since the 2023 Lyriq launch, according to General Motors sales data published May 2026. Tesla buyers represent the largest defector group, followed -Benz, BMW and Lexus owners switching to Cadillac's five-model EV range.

Q1 2026 Sales Split Reveals Model Performance

Through March 2026, Cadillac sold 9,500 electric vehicles, up 20 percent year-over-year. The Optiq drove growth with 65.9 percent sales increase after its early 2025 launch. Vistiq deliveries jumped from 1 unit in Q1 2025 to 1,902 units in Q1 2026 — a 190,100 percent gain. Basic arithmetic shows 1,901 additional Vistiq sales versus the prior year. However, the Lyriq fell 21.6 percent to 3,370 units. Escalade IQ dropped 26.8 percent. The mixed results across GM's portfolio restructuring show uneven demand for different EV segments. Current pace suggests 38,000 annual sales, down from 2025's near-50,000 total.

Performance Specs Target German Rivals

The Optiq-V delivers 519 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, reaching 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. Those numbers directly challenge BMW's performance EV strategy and Mercedes-AMG electric models. Cadillac's V-Series variants include both Lyriq-V and Optiq-V configurations, matching the dual-performance approach used by German manufacturers. The acceleration figure places Optiq-V between Tesla Model Y Performance and BMW iX M60 specifications. Tesla Model Y Performance reaches 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, while BMW iX M60 takes 3.8 seconds. Cadillac positions itself in the middle of this performance bracket, appealing to buyers who want quicker acceleration than BMW but prefer traditional luxury brand prestige over Tesla's tech-first approach.

GM Strategy Document Outlined EV Leadership

General Motors designated Cadillac as its electric vehicle flagship in January 2019, according to the company's electrification strategy announcement. The document established Cadillac's role as GM's luxury EV spearhead ahead of Chevrolet and Buick electric models. Four years later, the 2023 Lyriq became the first production vehicle under this mandate. The strategy document preceded the Ultium platform development that now spans from the affordable Equinox EV to the ultra-luxury Celestiq sedan. GM's approach differs from Honda's slower EV rollout by concentrating electric development in one premium brand first. The five-model lineup includes Lyriq, Optiq, Vistiq, Escalade IQ, and limited-production Celestiq, plus V-Series performance variants.

Federal Tax Credit Removal Clouds 2026 Outlook

Cadillac's current sales pace suggests 40,000 EVs for 2026, down from nearly 50,000 in 2025 despite model range expansion. The federal tax credit elimination explains part of this decline, but not the complete picture. Optiq sales rose 65.9 percent while Lyriq fell 21.6 percent, suggesting buyer preferences shifted rather than overall demand collapse. The contradiction between new model success and established model decline indicates market segmentation within Cadillac's own lineup. Industry data shows premium EV sales declining industry-wide, yet Cadillac's 75 percent conquest rate from competitors suggests the brand is gaining share in a shrinking market. This simultaneous conquest success and volume decline creates an unusual market dynamic where Cadillac wins customers but loses total sales.

Cadillac launched its EV strategy 84 months after Tesla began Model S production in 2012, yet captured 100,000 sales faster than Mercedes EQS or BMW iX individual model launches. The brand now offers more EV variants than Lexus or Infiniti combined. The complete Cadillac model history and specifications are catalogued in the Global Auto Index manufacturer database.
