PSA Peugeot Citro’n, has issued the following press release:
In a rapidly changing market influenced by ever more demanding consumers, Peugeot is launching the 407, its new saloon in the “middle to upper” segment. The 407 saloon, which will rapidly be followed by an SW model, is the first member of the new 407 family responsible for carrying forward Peugeot’s key values ’ Dynamism,Value for Money,Visual Appeal ’ and Innovation.
This market segment has immense strategic importance for a mainstream manufacturer and, for decades the famous “4” series vehicles have played a key part in Peugeot’s history. The 407 saloon is a worthy successor to the 406 saloon and paves the way for a new page in Peugeot’s history.
Historically, saloon customers in the M2 segment are attracted by the marque’s motoring pedigree when viewing models in this sector. While not wholly convinced of the merits of a larger saloon in the H segment, they nevertheless seek some of the benefits offered in terms of comfort and technology. Additionally, many also seek the dynamism offered in smaller cars ’ an area where Peugeot has always excelled.
4.676 m of verve
At first sight the new 407 stirs the emotions, thanks to the new, elegant, feline balance of its appearance. Its highly evocative front aspect retains the big-cat feel, but also features an air intake shaped like an open mouth and a prominent badge ’ two strong design features that mark a new stylistic approach for the Marque.
The profile evokes the posture of an animal ready to pounce. Resting on large-diameter wheels, the aluminium bonnet and immense windscreen, are the precursors of “muscles” that span the vehicle’s length to its short and powerful rear aspect. The overall effect is one of power, strength and security, combined with a promise of exceptional dynamic performance.
The 407 is based on the design platform of middle and upper segment PSA Peugeot Citro’n vehicles. The specification has however been updated significantly to meet Peugeot’s distinctive requirements for road-holding, driveability and safety. Its overall size places it in the middle of its segment with the following
dimensions:
Length: 4.676 metres
Width: 1.811 metres
Wheelbase: 2.725 metres
Height: 1.445 metres
Wide range of engines
The petrol and Diesel HDi engines that power the 407 feature the latest technology to providing numerous benefits to the customer ’ 5-speed and 6-speed manual gearboxes, 4-speed or 6-speed automatic gearboxes, compliance with Euro 4 environmental standards and the inclusion of a particulate emission filter on Diesel versions. — revolutionary Peugeot 1007 small car.
Petrol engines:
The entry level comprises a 1.8 litre engine (EW7J4) with 16 valves and a motorised throttle developing 85 kW (approx. 117 bhp) and a torque of 163 Nm, combined with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
In mid range is a 2.0 litre engine (EW10J4), also with 16 valves and a motorised throttle, developing 100 kW (approx. 136 bhp) and a torque of 190 Nm, combined with either a 5-speed manual gearbox, or a 4-speed automatic, autoadaptive gearbox with “Porsche Tiptronic System” control.
At the top of the range there are two options:
– 2.2 litre engine (EW12J4) with a power ouput of 116 kW (approx. 160 bhp) and a torque of 217 Nm, combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed automatic autoadaptive gearbox with “Porsche Tiptronic System” control.
or
– 3.0 litre V6 engine (ES9A), offering a power output of 155 kW (approx. 211 bhp) and a torque of 290 Nm. This engine incorporates a variable valve timing system (VVT) that allows more linear acceleration and a new exhaust with an active dual-mode system offering superior performance at high engine speeds and improved noise insulation. It is combined with an all-new 6-speed automatic gearbox equipped with the “Porsche Tiptronic System” to enhance overall performance.
Diesel engines:
At launch, the 407 will feature two modern HDi Diesel engines offering high performance in terms of dynamism, driving economy and respect for the environment:
– 1.6 litre HDi engine (DV6TED4) with particulate emission filter (PEF) developing 80 kW (approx. 110 bhp) and a torque of 240 Nm, able to attain 260 Nm thanks to an over-boost that allows the turbo-charging pressure to be increased momentarily. It complies with Euro 4 legislation and eradicates particles by means of the PEF. It has a 16-valve cylinder head, an air/air intercooler, a variable geometry turbocharger and a new-generation Common Rail system in which the injection pressure has been increased to 1600 bar. It is combined with a 5-speed manual — PSA's European assembly plant expansion.
gearbox.
– 2.0 litre HDi engine (DW10BTED4) with particulate emission filter (PEF) developing 100 kW (approx. 136 bhp) and a torque of 320 Nm, able to attain 340 Nm thanks to its “overboost” system. Compliant with Euro 4 legislation, it eliminates particles by means of its PEF and is combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox. As on the 1.6 litre HDi engine, this model features an air/air intercooler, a new-generation Common Rail system with an injection pressure of 1600 bar, and a variable geometry turbocharger.
In the future, the 407 will benefit from other Diesel HDi engines, in particular the 2.7 l V6 HDi engine (DT17), the next stage in the Ford/PSA Peugeot Citro’n development partnership. It may also feature a wider range of automatic gearboxes.
Driving pleasure ’ an area where Peugeot’sexpertise goes back a long way
The Peugeot marque is synonymous with dynamic performance, safety and driving pleasure ’ characteristics common to all the models regardless of their individual personality. Dynamically, the 407 is a worthy successor to the 406, a model with road-holding characteristics that still serve as the benchmark for its era.
Drawing on experience and specialist know-how, Peugeot has conceived and put together a highly efficient specification that covers all aspects of ride and handling. The performance levels resulting from selected technological features, specially adapted to the 407, are designed to provide instantly perceptible driving pleasure and exemplary active safety under all circumstances, without in any way compromising driver and passenger comfort.
This specification consists of axles that make extensive use of lightweight aluminium alloy for enhanced performance: — Citroën's economy car innovations.
– a front axle with double wishbone and a linked hub carrier offering a superb road holding and comfort, combined with excellent directional control.
– a multi-arm rear suspension with dampers inclined rearwards to optimise the width of the boot
Active safety on the 407 is of a high level and benefits from large disc brakes with a diameter up to 330 mm and a newgeneration ESP, which is present on all versions. The latter comprises an anti-skid function, ABS, emergency brake assist, new individual wheel brake force distribution, and a stability control system with particularly efficient correction of under- and over-steering.
Automatic activation of hazard warning lights in the event of sharp deceleration informs following vehicles of potential danger.
The exclusive V6 engine
To accompany its pedigree and performance, the V6 engine has unique suspension and steering that offer outstanding performance levels. The variable damping has four independentlycontrolled dampers with nine distinct settings absorption patterns, while the car also benefits from vehicle speed variable rate power steering.
