Intro: Burkard Bovensiepen, son of Dr. Rudolf Bovensiepen, founder of ALPINA office machines, started his activities with the development of a Weber dual carburetter for the new BMW 1500 back in 1961.
Four years later he established his own engineering company, using the Alpina name. Alpina set up a race team set in conjunction with BMW and for almost a decade it went from strength to strength.
In 1977 Alpina retired from racing for ten years so as to devote its full attention to developing fascinating automobiles for the road. The first examples of the BMW-based individual automobiles were completed in a year.
Today 140 employees work for Alpina, 90 per cent of them in the automotive sector. In 1999, a total of 660 vehicles were produced.
