Intro: Although the founder of the company, Soichiro Honda, developed a name for his firm as the world's most successful motorbike manufacturer, he ventured into producing motor cars in the early-1960s. As a measure of Mr Honda's determination, his car company became the third largest in its homeland of Japan by the turn of the 1990s. Mainly due to his extensive work in the two-wheeled scene, he was able to produce technologically interesting small cars and apart from the typical Japanese "Kei" class of machines, particularly the N360 and N600 models, he also made a fascinating S800 two-seater sports car, which remains as fascinating today as it was market-leading in the late-1960s. The first Civic models produced world-wide success for the company, which soon started to churn out the larger Accord saloon and Prelude Coupe models as well.
Honda has 3 sales channels (a total of 2,323 showrooms) in Japan: Clio, Verno and Primo.
In the U.S.A., Honda sells about 1.15 million cars per year, through 997 Honda dealers and 258 Acura dealers.
With its technological strength derived from the motorsports field, Honda has been showing excellent results from V-TEC engines to fuel-cell vehicles.
The domestic assembly plants (Suzuka, Sayama and Tochigi) are among the most advanced plants in terms of flexible production and a cost-efficient system. Honda plans to introduce its advanced production system to all Honda overseas factories. The company consigns minivehicle production to its subsidiary, Yachiyo Kogyo.
