Intro: Originally established as the American manufacturing plant for Mazda in 1984, the AutoAlliance name was applied to the Michigan-based operation in 1992 when Ford joined in.
Until Autumn 2002 the USA-version of the Mazda 626 and the soon-to-be-discontinued Mercury Cougar were assembled by 1600 UAW represented
hourly employees and 300 salaried employees.
On 18 October, 2002 production of the new Mazda 6 sports sedan has started at the factory. In preparation for the start-up of U.S. production, 200 AAI employees were trained at Mazda's Hofu, Japan plant and more than 100 engineers were dispatched from Japan as long as a year to assure product quality meets Mazda's exacting standards.
On 10 February, 2003 it was announced that the all-new 2005 Ford Mustang which was previewed at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show will be built at the site from 2004. |
