Intro: Saturn is the first from-scratch GM entity in nearly 60 years. Development of the company and the automobiles took eight years. Designed originally with the intent of not only competing with the formidable Japanese imports in America, but stealing back those customers GM had lost to Honda, Toyota, and other Japanese brands, Saturn offered a breath of fresh air to the biggest car company in the world.
The first car rolled out of the Tennessee assembly plant in July of 1990, and while it wasn't an overwhelming savior against the imports, it did make a dent in their sales, and bolstered GM's success.
Unfortuantely quality and image problems resulted in heavy decline of sales and performance variations of mediocre designs didn't help either.
