Intro: GAZ, the Gorky Auto Plant was established in 1930 as part of Stalin's first five-year plan to industrialize the country. A huge land in Nizhny Novgorod was provided for this purpose. Currently the city is Russia's Detroit with a population of 1.5 million.
Interestingly an American construction company was selected to build the factory. Also the first products were Ford AA trucks back in the 1930s.
Between the 1950s and 1980s GAZ was mainly a producer of trucks and also produced such legendary Soviet vehicles as the Pobida, the Tschaika and the various generation of Volga cars.
Currently GAZ is Russia’s first producer of trucks and 2nd biggest producer of automobiles and minivans. Best known models are the Volga sedans and the Sobol and GAZelle trucks and vans. |
