Intro: The company took over the assembly lines of the Spanish Seat Toledo from a group of Mexican businessmen. Production commenced in 1999. The first batch was sold to the Wuhu taxi fleet.
In 2001 Shanghai Auto Industry Corporation Group took over the company and an ambitious expansion plan saw the growth of the company from about 30,000 units in 2001 to 91223 units in 2003. The original Qiyun (SQR7160) is now joined by an updated version (SRQ7162), the controversial Daewoo Matiz-inspired QQ and the Ford Mondeo-like Oriental Son.
SAIC backed out from Chery in late 2003 due to mounting tensions between Chery and GM. The company is now on its own.
Chery is pursuing aggressive export plans, including an entry on the North American market in 2007. |
