Intro: By phasing out passenger car production in the United Kingdom, Ford's Cologne plant is the oldest continuously functioning assembly site of the American giant in Europe.
Ford Motor Company AG was established in Berlin back in 1925. Assembly of the Ford Model T was commenced but after only three years it was replaced by the Model "A". It was decided that Ford needs a proper plant to assemble this then revolutionary model. Cologne was the chosen selection and in on the 4th of May, 1931 the first Model A rolled off the Cologne assembly line.
Today Cologne and the Saarlouis site which was established in 1966 produce more than a million cars per year (1103635 in 2001).
The Cologne site was recently improved with an investment of over 525 million Euros to produce the new Fiesta more efficiently. The factory now turns out 1800 new Fiestas everyday while Saarlouis is busy assembly the Focus.
