Intro: General Motors Poland (Warsaw) and Opel Polska (Gliwice) imports and distributes Opel passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. Assembly of the Opel Astra began in Warsaw in November 1994, and in December 1998 production there was switched to the Opel Vectra and then to the old Astra limousine, named Classic. Production at the Warsaw site ended in 2001.
In October 1998 a new car plant was inaugurated in Gliwice. Located in the industrial region of Silesia in southern Poland it was modeled on Opel's up-to-date Eisenach plant in Germany.
In 2004 it was announced that plant capacity will be extended by placing some of the 2nd generation Zafira production there.
During early 2005, production of the Suzuki Wagon R+, a sibling to the Agila, was transferred to Gliwice from Esztergom.
