Its Altona plant, claimed to be the most modern car plant in the Southern hemisphere was inaguarated in 1994. Altona has its own unusual layout, with seven parallel assembly lines, each leading into the next. The "kanban" (Just-in-Time) system of component supply is used, with an orderly complex of conveyor belts bringing each component to its correct place on the line at the correct time as the car bodies move along at a steady pace.
The plant produces 420 complete vehicles each working day and its has a maximum a capacity of 100 000 vehicles per annum.
The first Toyotas have arrived to the continent in 1951 and local manufacturing started in 1963. |
