Intro: Manufacturing started back in 1966. The original Motor Assemblies companies was renamed to Toyota SA Manufacturing in 1981.
In 2002 Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), of Japan acquired a majority shareholding in Toyota South Africa and thus a new chapter was opened in the local history. Annual production is set to double to more than 150 000 units within five years.
The ninth generation Toyota Corolla was launched in South Africa at the end of September, 2002 and it will enter the market with 58% local content. Corollas are now exported to the Australian market
Toyota South Africa is now an integral part of Toyota's world-wide manufacturing network. In 2005 new models, belonging to the IMV program were introduced on the local market. |
