Intro: From its origins as the Maxwell-Chalmers Motor Company in the 1920s, Chrysler Canada Ltd., established in 1925, has grown into one of the big players on the Canadian automotive landscape.
One of the first Canadian automotive manufacturers to begin large-scale shipments to the United States under the 1965 Automotive Products Trade Agreement, DaimlerChrysler Canada continues to supply North America and the world with many well-known products, like the Voyager minivans.
With the historic Chrysler-Daimler Benz merger in 1998, Chrysler Canada got a new corporate identity. The company's name was formally changed from Chrysler Canada Ltd. to DaimlerChrysler Canada Inc. in June, 1999.
In June 2000, the company announced a $1.5 billion investment for the expansion of the Pillette Assembly Plant. The following month the two millionth large sedan rolled off the line at Bramalea Assembly Plant. Later that same month, Windsor Assembly began production of the fourth-generation minivans.
Currently there are four plants in Canada employing some 16200 workers who during 2000 built 704000 cars of which about 600000 were exported. |
