Intro: Cobra, Sabre, & TG: Alec MacDonald, the man behind Almac, is probably best known for his Cobra replicas ’ which he has been building for many years. Recently there has been a big resurgence in interest for the Cobra and Almac have been virtually
producing one kit per month for the last year ’ with the majority of the cars being bought by NZ enthusiasts. A newer Almac, the Sabre, was introduced in 1994 ’ and is currently being redeveloped to take Holden V6 power and fully independent rear suspension. Almac have also developed a racing version of the Sabre and the first car, powered by a Rover V8, has already completed many races. Another new development at Almac has also seen the company expending their involve-ment
with Lotus 7-style replicas. Almac have been selling various parts for such cas for many years but, more recently, they have put together a basic clubman kit. This consists of a Graham Berry-designed chassis (the same man behind the Almac
Cobra’s chassis), cycles guards (with clamshell guards available at extra cost), scuttle and fibre-glass nose cone at a cost of around $4,5000. Almac believes this starter kit will be a great boon for enthusi-asts looking to built their own ’Locost’ type of sports car. |
