Intro: AUDI AG chose the Hungarian city of Gyor as its new production location in November 1992. The new engine plant was officially opened less than two years later. A workforce of around 4,900 was employed there at the start of 2001. Audi has access to a good supply of skilled workers and highly qualified graduates from the Institute of Technology. The Gyor site is a duty-free area, permitting the flexible delivery and collection of production components and engines. Almost the entire range of Audi engines is now produced in Gyor. Production of Audi TT models in Hungary commenced in April 1998. More than 145,000 of the Audi TT Coup’ and Audi TT Roadster have left the assembly lines in Gyor.
Painted body shells are assembled in Ingolstadt and travel overnight by railway to Hungary. The next morning in Gyor, the mechanicals are installed, then the TTs are transferred back to Ingostadt by rail overnight.
Final assembly of the Audi A3 commenced there in April 2001. The top-of-the-line S3 and the 1.8T Quattro are being manufactured.
It is no wonder that Audi has opened a new development center in Gy’r recently.
Over 1.2 million engines and 53606 passenger cars were made in 2002. 35000 TT sportscars and more than 10000 S3 hatchbacks were assembled.
