Intro: Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) PLC employs around 2,500 people at its two manufacturing sites in the UK: a car assembly plant at Burnaston, Derbyshire, and an engine plant at Deeside, Clwyd, Wales.
Production at Burnaston started in December 1992 with the Carina E, and has now been extended to include Avensis Saloon, Liftback and Estate models. Avensis is the only car of its class available in the UK for which all body shapes are manufactured locally. Another model - the Corolla Liftback - commenced production at Burnaston in Autumn 1998, bringing total output to 220,000 vehicles per year.
Toyota is the UK's fourth largest exporter of fully built-up cars. Cars are exported from Burnaston to continental Europe, Japan, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.
