Intro: PT Toyota-Astra Motor was established on April 12, 1971 as a joint venture between PT Astra International, Tbk and
Toyota Motor Corporation - Japan. Production started in 1975.
During its near 30-year history the company has assembled such models, as the Crown, the Corona, the Corolla, the Starlet, the Land Cruiser and the Kijang utility vehicle.
In February 2003 it was decided that the company will be reorganized into separate manufacturing and distribution entities. With the planned reorganization Toyota Motor Co will acquire a majority stake of 95% in the manufacturing entity.
Number of employees: approx. 4,900 (as of January 2003)
Units produced in 2002: 84,747 units. In the first eight months of 2003, Toyota produced 44,758 Kijangs. Kijang vans are exported to Brunei, the South Pacific, Papua New Guinea and East Timor in completely built-up (CBU) form and to South Africa, Malaysia and the Philippines and Taiwan in completely knocked down(CKD) form. |
