P’ter Medgyessy, Hungarian prime minister and Osamu Suzuki, CEO and MD of Suzuki Motor Corp. unveiled the new Ignis today at the Esztergom plant of Suzuki Motor Corp.
The new Ignis is the European version of the Japanese Chevrolet Cruze, an enhanced version of the Suzuki Swift/Ignis will be put on the Hungarian market in May. The car will make its international debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. — Swift Sport variant.
The car which was developed with an initial investment of EUR 80,000,000 is 12 centimetres longer than the Cruze. It features a brand new interior and the suspension was tailored to the European roads. It was said to be tested at the Nardo test track in Italy.
First a 1.3-liter petrol version will be offered, powered by a new 1328 cc engine, capable of 69 kW @ 6000 rpm and 118 Nm of torque @ 4100 rpm. At the Frankfurt Motor Show a 1.5-liter petrol version will be introduced and a 1.25 DDiS diesel. The latter will be sourced from Polish GM-Fiat powertrain plant. It is the same unit which will be used in the Fiat Gingo. — Suzuki-Fiat collaboration.
Both Suzuki and Subaru 4wd versions will also be offered.
This year about 25000 units are predicted to be made before production reaches full capacity of about 55000 units next year. — Tokyo Motor Show.
Part of the Suzuki European Renaissance programme, the new Ignis will be followed by the series-produced version of the Concept-S next Autumn.
