Intro: Ford established its first assembly plant in Belgium back in in 1922. Its first product was the legendary Model T.
After the 2nd World War Ford returned to Belgium and set up a new plant in Genk (east of Antwerp) to assemble the Transit vans. The next major product was the Sierra of which 2.7 million were produced between 1984-1992.
Currently the Mondeo which replaced the Sierra is the sole product of the Genk plant as Transit production is being transfferred to a Ford plant in Kocaeli, Turkey.
With an investment of $813 million the plant is undergoing a major revamp which will enable it to build four different models there and to step production up or down according to demand. |
