Intro: One of the first joint ventures in Russia's automotive industry the Doninvest financial-industrial group and the Korean Daewoo Motors company agreed to produce various Daewoo models at Doninvest's Aksay plant in Taganrog. The poorly mechanized site lasted for only a few years and then went bankrupt. Citro’n which was looking for a Russian partner quickly stepped in. Between 2000-2002 the Berlingo was assembled and marketed as the Doninvest Orion.
In 2001 another Korean maker, Hyundai Motors signed an agreement on the CKD manufacturing of the Verna (known in Europe as the Accent). From 2004 the company, which is now known as the Taganrog Automobile Factory (TagAZ) is focusing solely on Hyundai products. Hyundai is highly succesful on the Russian market - it was the best-selling "imported" brand in 2005 with 87,457 units sold. |
