BMW iX4 Debuts With 603 hp and 428-Mile Range Claim

Production starts early 2026, with the base iX4 50 xDrive carrying a $66,220 sticker before destination charges.

BMW pulled the covers off the iX4 on October 7. Two trims. Both all-wheel drive. The M60 variant hits 603 hp and 149 mph. That puts it squarely against Porsche's Macan Electric and Mercedes-AMG's EQE SUV without borrowing a combustion engine to do it.

The iX4 arrives as the second Neue Klasse SUV, following the iX3 revealed weeks earlier. According to BMW's product announcement, published October 2025, both models share sixth-generation eDrive technology and the same 112.2-kWh usable battery pack. Where the iX3 is upright, the iX4 trades cargo volume for a lower roofline — a body-style split BMW last executed in the X4 versus X3 combustion pairing.

Two Trims, One Battery, Divergent Outputs

BMW is selling the iX4 in exactly two configurations at launch. The iX4 50 xDrive pairs dual motors for 463 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque; 0–60 mph takes 4.7 seconds and top speed is capped at 130 mph. The iX4 M60 xDrive steps that up to 603 hp and 645 lb-ft, cutting the sprint to 3.7 seconds — one full second quicker — and raising the ceiling to 149 mph. Both draw from an identical 112.2-kWh usable pack. On that figure: the power-to-capacity ratio for the M60 works out to 5.37 hp per kWh, versus 4.13 hp per kWh for the 50 — a 30-percent spread from a shared cell architecture. BMW has confirmed a 428-mile WLTP-adjacent range for the iX4 50; the M60 figure remained unpublished as of the premiere date. Towing capacity — 4,400 lb with the optional hitch — is identical across both variants. iX4 M60 Against the iX3 M60: Same Power, Different Body

BMW confirmed the iX4 M60's 603 hp output matches the iX3 M60 exactly. That is deliberate platform sharing, not coincidence. The iX3 M60, also running sixth-generation eDrive, offers an upright roofline and presumably more boot space; BMW has not published a direct cargo-volume comparison between the two models. What the iX4 trades in headroom it gains in aerodynamic profile — a lower, fastback-style silhouette that BMW says reduces drag, though no specific coefficient figure was released at premiere. For comparison, the Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 SUV produces 617 hp in its top state and starts above $110,000 in the United States. The base iX4 50 opens at $66,220 before destination — meaning BMW's entry point sits roughly $44,000 below AMG's equivalent performance floor. The Porsche Macan Turbo Electric, at around $107,000 and 630 hp, represents a closer output match to the M60, though its battery capacity of 100 kWh runs 12.2 kWh smaller than the iX4's pack.

M Sport Standard Fit: Not Optional, Not Upsold

BMW's October 2025 product brief states that "every iX4 comes standard with the M Sport Package" — a line that deserves attention. On the iX3 and on current combustion X-series models, M Sport trims have carried a separate price line. Bundling the package into the base specification of the iX4 50 means 20-inch M wheels, M Sport brake hardware, and exterior trim arrive without an additional charge. The M60 escalates that further: 21-inch wheels, red brake calipers, black mirror caps, a black rear diffuser, and an M-specific spoiler that BMW says increases rear-axle downforce. Inside the M60, a red 12 o'clock marker on the steering wheel and a 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system replace the iX4 50's 7-speaker standard fit. BMW's M Yellow Lights remain an option on the M60. The brief does not specify the cost of that option, nor does it confirm whether M Yellow Lights will be available at all markets simultaneously.

The Missing M60 Range Number

BMW published a 428-mile range figure for the iX4 50 xDrive at world premiere. It published nothing for the iX4 M60 xDrive. That gap is worth noting. Both vehicles use the same 112.2-kWh usable battery. The M60 adds 140 hp and 170 lb-ft over the 50, carries heavier 21-inch wheels versus 20-inch, and rides on Adaptive M Suspension with stiffer anti-roll bar links at the front axle. Each of those factors degrades efficiency. A conservative estimate — assuming a 12–15 percent consumption penalty relative to the 50's claimed figure — would place M60 range somewhere between 364 and 376 miles. BMW has not confirmed that range will be published before the M60 goes on sale, which is described only as "shortly after" the iX4 50's March 2027 on-sale date. For a variant likely priced above $80,000, the absence of a range number at premiere is an unusual omission. Georg Loch, product communications manager at BMW Group, had not responded to a request for clarification by publication time.

March 2027 on Sale: Timing and Retail Impact

The iX4 50 xDrive reaches dealerships in March 2027. BMW has not disclosed destination charges, which on current X-series models run between $995 and $1,095 in the United States. At $66,220 base, the iX4 50 slots $4,000 above the outgoing X4 xDrive30i's entry price — a meaningful step given that the combustion X4 carries a longer model history and established resale data. For BMW's North American retail network, the iX4 represents the first coupe-bodied Neue Klasse product to reach showrooms. That matters for stores that have seen X4 volume soften against the more upright X5 and X6 in recent quarters, according to BMW Group's Q2 2025 sales release. The M60 variant's pricing remains unconfirmed; BMW stated it would announce figures closer to that model's separate launch window. Destination charges for the M60 were likewise unaddressed, leaving total cost of ownership calculations incomplete for fleet procurement officers at this stage.

BMW's Neue Klasse platform — underpinning the iX4 alongside the iX3 — is also scheduled to spawn a production sedan, with BMW Group confirming an iX3-based derivative for the Chinese market in a separate product filing dated Q3 2025. The iX4 will be manufactured at BMW's Leipzig plant, which already builds the combustion X4. Leipzig's EV line retooling began in 2024.
