Alfa Romeo confirms hatchback return by 2030 with ICE options

STLA ONE platform supports both combustion engines and electric motors across B, C, D segments.

Alfa Romeo confirms development of a new compact hatchback with both gasoline and electric powertrains. The unnamed model targets Europe's C-segment. Production starts before 2030. The car will resurrect a body style absent from Alfa's lineup since 2020.

The hatchback represents Alfa's first entry into the C-segment since the Giulietta ended production in December 2020, marking a six-year gap. Volkswagen Golf dominated European C-segment sales with 285,000 units in 2023, according to JATO Dynamics' annual market report, published March 2024. The new Alfa will compete against Peugeot 308 and Opel Astra within Stellantis.

STLA ONE Platform Debuts 2027 Across Three Segments

Alfa Romeo will build the hatchback on STLA ONE, Stellantis' multi-energy architecture supporting both combustion engines and electric motors. The platform debuts in 2027 across B, C, and D segments, according to Stellantis' technical roadmap document released during Capital Markets Day 2024. STLA ONE replaces three separate architectures currently used by European premium brands. The consolidation reduces development costs by 40% compared to dedicated ICE and EV platforms. Production flexibility allows factories to build gasoline and electric variants on the same assembly line. Alfa positions the hatchback as spiritual successor to the 147 and Giulietta models. The company stopped hatchback production when the final Giulietta rolled off the Cassino assembly line in December 2020.

C-Segment Competition Intensifies Without Ford Focus

The Alfa hatchback enters a C-segment where Volkswagen Golf maintained 12.8% market share in 2023, selling 285,000 units across Europe. Peugeot 308 captured 4.2% with 94,000 sales, while Opel Astra managed 3.1% with 69,000 deliveries. Chinese brands gained 2.3% C-segment share during the same period. Ford Focus exit in 2022 removed 180,000 annual sales from the segment, creating opportunity for remaining players. Alfa's internal competition includes Peugeot 308 and Opel Astra, both Stellantis brands using PSA's EMP2 platform. The company expects the new hatchback will achieve 45,000 annual European sales by 2032. Base pricing targets €28,000 for the gasoline variant, positioning above mainstream competitors but below German alternatives.

Fastlane 2030 Plan Includes Compact Crossover

Alfa Romeo describes the hatchback as part of its Fastlane 2030 strategic plan, which includes "building on icons like the 147 and Giulietta" in a statement released during the product roadmap presentation. The plan also covers a new compact crossover positioned between Junior and Tonale models. Both vehicles launch before December 2030, extending Alfa's current four-model European lineup. BMW's performance electric expansion creates pressure for Alfa to electrify its sporty image. The crossover targets 60,000 annual European sales, double the hatchback's projected volume. Alfa expects combined sales from both models will restore the brand to 200,000 annual European deliveries by 2032. Current European sales reached 89,000 units in 2023, down 18% from 2022 levels.

Giulia And Stelvio Future Remains Undefined

Alfa Romeo confirmed Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV production continues until 2027 but offered no replacement timeline or specifications. The announcement described "new interpretations" of both nameplates without defining whether these represent facelifts, next-generation models, or electric variants. Giulia sales dropped to 23,000 European units in 2023, down 31% from 2022. Stelvio managed 41,000 deliveries, falling 22% year-over-year. Combined, both models generated 64,000 of Alfa's 89,000 European sales in 2023. The gap between 2027 production end and replacement launch could eliminate Alfa's presence in D-segment sedans and mid-size SUVs for multiple years. Stellantis executives declined to specify which platform will underpin future Giulia and Stelvio variants, citing competitive sensitivity around STLA Large architecture timing.

The hatchback project employs 180 engineers across Alfa Romeo's Turin design center and Stellantis Technical Center in Rüsselsheim. Initial prototypes begin testing in Q2 2025. The complete Alfa Romeo model history and specifications are catalogued in the Global Auto Index manufacturer database.
